A comparative study on illumination preprocessing in face recognition
نویسندگان
چکیده
Illumination preprocessing is an effective and efficient approach in handling lighting variations for face recognition. Despite much attention to face illumination preprocessing, there is seldom systemic comparative study on existing approaches that presents fascinating insights and conclusions in how to design better illumination preprocessing methods. To fill this vacancy, we provide a comparative study of 12 representative illumination preprocessing methods (HE, LT, GIC, DGD, LoG, SSR, GHP, SQI, LDCT, LTV, LN and TT) from two novel perspectives: (1) localization for holistic approach and (2) integration of large-scale and small-scale feature bands. Experiments on public face databases (YaleBExt, CMU-PIE, CAS-PEAL and FRGC V2.0) with illumination variations suggest that localization for holistic illumination preprocessing methods (HE, GIC, LTV and TT) further improves the performance. Integration of large-scale and small-scale feature bands for reflectance field estimation based illumination preprocessing approaches (SSR, GHP, SQI, LDCT, LTV and TT) is also found helpful for illumination-insensitive face recognition. & 2012 Elsevier Ltd. An Efficient Face Recognition under Varying Image Conditions
Performance of the face verification system depends on many conditions. One of the most problematic is varying illumination condition. Making recognition more reliable under uncontrolled lighting conditions is one of the most important challenges for practical face recognition systems. Our paper presents a simple and efficient preprocessing method that eliminates most of the effects of changing...
متن کاملA Study on the Effective Approach to Illumination-Invariant Face Recognition Based on a Single Image
In this paper, the methods for single image-based face recognition under varying lighting are reviewed. Meanwhile, some representative methods as well as their combinations are evaluated by experiments, and the underlying principle of the experimental results is investigated. According to our investigation, it is almost impossible to attain a satisfied face recognition result by using only one ...
متن کاملAn Illumination Invariant Texture Based Face Recognition
Automatic face recognition remains an interesting but challenging computer vision open problem. Poor illumination is considered as one of the major issue, since illumination changes cause large variation in the facial features. To resolve this, illumination normalization preprocessing techniques are employed in this paper to enhance the face recognition rate. The methods such as Histogram Equal...
متن کاملAn Image Preprocessing Algorithm for Illumination Invariant Face Recognition
Face recognition algorithms have to deal with significant amounts of illumination variations between gallery and probe images. State-of-the-art commercial face recognition algorithms still struggle with this problem. We propose a new image preprocessing algorithm that compensates for illumination variations in images. From a single brightness image the algorithm first estimates the illumination...
متن کاملIllumination compensation and normalization in eigenspace-based face recognition: A comparative study of different pre-processing approaches
The aim of this work is to investigate illumination compensation and normalization in eigenspace-based face recognition by carrying out an independent comparative study among several pre-processing algorithms. This research is motivated by the lack of direct and detailed comparisons of those algorithms in equal working conditions. The results of this comparative study intend to be a guide for t...
